Hello all,

After the conference survey results came out, Francois Heon got in touch with me and asked if I might be interested in hosting a gathering of Network members. Realizing that 2018 is such an auspicious year, I recruited my colleague and co-author Carrie Staton to the team, along with Sebastien Damart. We are planning a very affordable and creative conference experience on our campus that also features a call for chapters for an edited volume, the final chapter of which will be written from the results of our conference dialogues and deliberations.

Thanks to you, Carrie and Sebastien for picking up and running with the idea.  As you know, Follett never stops giving, so I have a whole bunch of areas that I'd happily explore.  Rather than spell them out right now, I will await hearing more about your teams' thinking today.  Many years ago, probably in the late 70s, I attended a conference (small about 15 people who ran programs in the area of law-related education.)  It was in some lovely wooded area, and was a fascinating learning experience. I could immediately put to work what I had learned.  ~ Albie

This sounds like a well-designed idea that addresses many of the desires from the survey. I would plan to attend. I would also like to suggest that all network members continue to think about a wide range of things that they could help make happen in a variety of locales throughout that special anniversary year - e.g., readings from The New State, mini-panel discussions, special journal articles, art projects -- whatever it takes to get Follett's insight farther, wider, and deeper into the world's view.

Dear Matthew, dear Margaret, I would like to come to the conference from 14-16. June 2018. My request, however, is: Could you check again whether it would be possible to have this conference held in Boston? The reason: I would be glad if the journey would be easy to arrange well.Morgantown in West Virginia may not be so easy to reach. Many thanks for your interest! Also, please see the Call for Chapters for a book associated with the conference.

Morgantown is 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Pittsburgh Airport. There is public transportation as well as rental car availability. Some people may be arranging to carpool from the airport and we may be able to run a shuttle van a couple times on the arrival and departure days. You may also choose to fly to Morgantown via Dulles Airport in Washington D.C.--it is a 50 minute flight on a small airplane. These details will be on the conference website in June. Due to faculty responsibilities, we will not be able to coordinate logistics until then.

It is possible that not everyone who wants to will be able to make that gathering on those dates and in this location. I think that we should work to make the Morgantown meeting as successful as possible while also being ready to help support other meetings, too, for maximum inclusiveness and maximum impact. And we shouldn't limit the marketing for this to Follett Network members. It's a big world and it's a big year. Boston is a big magnet, for obvious reasons. So is something in Europe, or on the west coast of the US, or Australia, etc.

Matthew, while I appreciate the interest in multipliers and encourage everyone to do what they can to promote celebrating the 100th anniversary of The New State throughout 2018, I also believe that if the network members do not actively support initiatives put forward by their comrades, this is not much of a "network." It would be very nice to see evidence of solidarity. Instead of pointing out that not everyone can make it to Morgantown June 14-16, 2018, how about putting forward some problem solving ideas to ensure that the very most of those who wish to participate in the one event that is actually scheduled can do so? For example, we are pursuing funding for scholarships to assist with travel costs or to make registration free. What might you be able to provide? For example, perhaps you could support real-time internet streaming of sessions or interactive skype participation for Network members? In other words, in what ways are you (and other Network members) "ready to help support other meetings?" 

The host committee apologizes, but when we initially inquired about rooms, services, meals, fees, etc. for a June conference, the facilities staff failed to inform us that much of what we were asking about is blocked out for the month due to visits from new students and their families. Rather than change the location and greatly increase the cost of the conference, we changed the date of the conference to keep the fees in the desired range according to the Network survey. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience!!!
